Forty­eight hours after the Brazilian govemment banned the burning of the Amazon rainforest, almost 4,000 new fires were spotted. The burning of the Amazon seemed terrible enough. It is even more painful to learn that most of these fires are deliberately set. They are started by farmers looking to expand farmland, or companies looking to exploit natural resources from the forest. Brazil's government loosened restrictions on forest cleaning in 2012 and now, hundreds of square miles a month are being cleared to make way for cattle production and mining projects.

Shrugging off the government's prohibition of setting fire to rainforests, farmers and enterprises continue their misdeed to expand territory of raising cattle or grabbing natural resources. Consequently, deforestation peaked in 2019.

Never can the significance of preserving the Amazon rainforest be overemphasized. Firstly, as the main habitat of diverse species and rare animals, the loss of rainforest will deprive them of a physical surrounding to rest and breed, thus threatening biodiversity and tipping the vulnerable ecological balance. Secondly, as the lung of our mother  earth, rainforest plays an instrumental in adjusting climates, restoring damage and counterbalancing global warming.

How to make a tradeoff between economic development and forest preservation? Firstly, the local government can launch educational programs in schools or communities to impress on farmers and entrepreneurs the importance of proper logging or mining. Say, small trees can be spared and now ones will be planted once the soil is bared. Secondly, environmental­friendly industries such as eco­tourism can be introduced to substitute the existing yet less lucrative cattle raising or mining program.
