Asclimatechangecontinuestoalter(改變)ourplanet,humanswill...

As climate change continues to alter (改變) our planet, humans will soon be forced to find new ways to feed the growing population. It’s estimated that the amount of food produced will have to double in order to meet the needs of over nine billion people that could occupy Earth in the next 30 years – But climate change threatens much of the land needed to support these crops.

In a new study, researchers explain which areas are expected to be hit hardest, and reveal the future locations that may become more suitable to host wheat, corn and rice. The areas currently used to grow these crops could suffer major drops in productivity (生產力) by 2050, according to the study published in the journal, Nature Communications.

The study found that 43 percent of the world’s corn and about a third of all wheat and rice are grown in vulnerable (易受攻擊的) areas. Sub-Saharan Africa, South America and the Eastern US are expected to experience the most dramatic effects.

“Our model shows that on many areas of land currently used to grow crops, the potential to improve yields (產量) is greatly decreased as a result of the effects of climate change,” says Dr. Tom Pugh, lead researcher from the University of Birmingham. “But it raises an interesting opportunity for some countries in temperate (温帶的) areas, where the suitability of the climate to grow these major crops is likely to increase over the same period.”

“Of course, climate is just one factor when looking at the future of global agricultural practices,” Pugh says. “Local factors such as soil quality and water availability also have a very important effect on crop yields in real terms. But production of the world’s three major cereal (穀類) crops needs to keep up with demand, and if we can’t do that by making our existing land more efficient (有效率的), then the only other option is to increase the amount of land we use.”

A. Sub-Saharan Africa       B. South America

C. North America           D. The Eastern US

30. What is Dr. Tom Pugh’s attitude towards the effects of climate change?

A. Positive     B. Negative      C. Disappointed      D. Doubtful

31. What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A. Global agricultural practices are determined by the climate.

B. Water availability plays an important role in crop yields.

C. There is no possibility that production will catch up with demand.

D. It may be necessary to increase the amount of cropland in the future.
