A well-dressed man came into a famous jewelry shop. He explained that he wished to buy a pearl (珍珠) for his wife's birthday and that the price didn't matter since business had been  very good for him that year. After examining a number of beautiful and valuable pearls, he chose a nice black one that cost $5, paid for the pearl, shook hands with the jeweller and left.

A few days later the man returned and said his wife had liked the pearl so much that she wanted another one just like it. It had to be exactly the same size and quality (質量) as she wanted a pair of earrings(耳環) made.“Can you give me any advice on how to get such a pearl? ” said the man. The jeweller replied, “I would say it's nearly impossible to find an exact one like that pearl.”

The rich man asked the jeweller to advertise (登廣告) in the newspapers, and offered $25,000 for the matching pearl. Many people answered the ad (廣告) but nobody had a pearl that was just right. Just when the jeweller gave up hope, a little old lady came in. To his surprise, she pulled the wonderful pearl from her handbag. “I don't like to sell it,” she said sadly, “I inherited (繼承) it from my mother, and my mother inherited it from hers. 1.解析:選C。推理判斷題。由well-dressed及the price didn't matter可以得知他是a rich businessman;他不惜花重金買珍珠給自己的妻子過生日,故可以得知他是a good husband。

2.解析:選D。推理判斷題。由文意可知,他這樣做的目的是為了不引起商店的老闆的懷疑。

3.解析:選B。細節理解題。從第二段“The jeweller replied, ‘I would say it's nearly impossible to find an exact one like that pearl’”可知*。

4.解析:選A。推理判斷題。從第三段“ offered $25,000 for the matching pearl. Many people answered the ad”可以推知*。

5.解析:選C。推理判斷題。理解文章大意可知,那個人後來找不到了,顯然他帶着錢跑了。
